225-207 million years ago, this area was a tropical environment ten degrees above the equator. Thirty meter conifer trees (100 feet) as well as ginkos, ferns and 200 other plant forms existed here along with fish, amphibians, bird like anchosaurs, paracrocodylomorphs (ancestors to crocodiles), lizards, turtles and some early rodent mammals. Water was abundant with lakes, rivers and streams.

Around 13,000 BCE., nomadic Paleoindians are believed to have arrived, first for hunting and fishing, later for settling down.
