Approximately 3.5 million years ago during the Pliocene period, the volcano now known as Mount St. Helena in Napa County California, erupted leveling the surrounding redwood forest for over 11 kilometers (7 miles). At the time of their demise, many of the trees were over 2,000 years old and 20 meters (65 feet) high.
