6. All Photography is Autobiography (Self Portrait with Glasses) 2019

When I worked for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner (published from 1903 - 1989, in the Spanish Revival building designed by Julia Morgan for W.R. Hearst), I use to spend my down time in the morgue where all former stories (newspaper clippings) and photographs were stored in tall green cabinets ten to twelve feet high. The job of the employees who worked there were to pull photos for the editors for use (or reference) or to toss to make room for new ones that came from the staff photographers and wire services.
A photograph that was discarded (and I kept) was from Busby Berkeley's trial for manslaughter in 1935 (an automobile accident that he caused that killed 2 and injured 5). The photograph showed his glasses on the defense table in the courtroom. I always thought it was an fascinating document as it did not contain the individual but his visual aid.
My photograph, is a recreation of that anonymous 1935, press photograph.

The scar is from an endarterectomy.

Both of my grandfathers were "handy". One was a ship's carpenter; the other had knowledge of machinery and woodworking.
