For thousands of years, the Pomo Indians lived and hunted on the Mendocino Coast in California. Following the discovery of gold and the westward expansion into California by immigrants, the Bureau of Indian Affairs established the Mendocino Indian Reservation in 1856, near the Noyo River. In 1857, a military outpost was established and named after Capt. Braxton Bragg. In 1862, during the Civil War, the post was a military garrison until 1864, when it was decommissioned and the troops and equipment returned to the Presidio, San Francisco. Following the military's departure, the Indian reservation was dissolved in 1866, and settlement began by non-natives who started mills to harvest the redwoods for lumber.

In the following years, the cliffs and beaches adjacent to the city became the dumping grounds for garbage generated by the inhabitants. In 1967, this ceased and a cleanup of the waste sites began.

The discarded glass and pottery that was thrown into the ocean was sanded and polished over time by the wave action to resemble small jewel like pieces. The area is now called "Glass Beach". However, its popularity as a tourist destination may be its demise: the people that visit, take away the sea glass as souvenirs: what remains is disappearing.
